This brand new data shows that the OTC market posted growth of 4.3% in 2016 - a significant slowdown on the 5.4% growth reported for 15/14.
The US increased by 2.3% owing to a weak cough, cold & allergy season and an absence of major switches. Western Europe had a poor year with flat sales in France and low single-digit growth across the other Big 5 EU markets. However, a high level of new product development enabled Poland to achieve growth of 9.8%.
The previously buoyant Australian market declined by 1.2% following regulatory changes that caused a reduction in the informal export of VMS supplements to China. Similarly growth in Japan slowed to 0.2% owing to dwindling demand from Chinese tourists.
In spite of some underlying economic issues all of the BRICs continued to perform well ahead of the global average, although Brazil, China and India slowed down upon the previous year. By contrast, Russia accelerated to 11.3% owing to a strong cold & flu season in Q4.
DB6 contains over 25,000 records, covering over 10,000 brands and over 2,500 companies and tracks 97% of the global OTC market (64 countries.)
