New Brunswick patients wait longer for hip replacements but see improvements for hip fracture repairs

OTTAWA, March 28, 2017 /CNW/ - The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) has released its annual report on wait times for specific priority procedures across the country. The report found the following for New Brunswick in 2016:

• The percentage of patients who received a hip replacement within the benchmark time frame declined from 72% in 2012 to 60% in 2016. This remained below the pan-Canadian average.
• The percentage of patients who received a knee replacement within the benchmark dropped slightly, from 61% to 57%.
• 89% of patients received a hip fracture repair with 48 hours. This was an improvement since 2012.
• The percentage of patients who received their cataract surgery within the medically accepted time frame declined from 85% in 2012 to 78% in 2016.
• Almost all residents who needed radiation therapy started it within the benchmark.

The table below compares the New Brunswick and national numbers. A higher percentage means that more people had their procedures done within the medically acceptable time frame.
