CALGARY, Jan. 12, 2015 /CNW/ - In true holiday spirit, Calgary resident Carie Stock has been chosen by Bentall Kennedy's national Catch the Spirit Campaign as their holiday hometown hero for 2014.
The Catch the Spirit campaign encouraged the public to nominate extraordinary citizens from across the country leading up to the holiday season (http://catchthespirit.ca). Nominated by Tanya Heschl, Carie is the Executive Director of "Helping Families Handle Cancer" (www.helpingfamilieshandlecancer.com) which collects and distributes donations to help families who are struggling financially while their child is battling cancer. Carie is a childhood survivor of cancer who witnessed first-hand the struggles her single parent had when she was diagnosed with cancer.
"I'm a lucky girl to have received the Holiday Hero Award! This was very unexpected, as I didn't even know that I was nominated. I started Helping Families Handle Cancer 6 years ago to help families who are struggling financially while their child is battling cancer. In a way, it helps my family heal and reflect on the journey that I went through when I was a child battling cancer. Each of the these families go through so much and if we can help them in their journey, even just a little bit, I think it makes all the difference."
