National Grocers falls short again for Northern Ontario workers
SUDBURY, ON, June 23 /CNW/ - At a meeting held between the Union and Loblaw on June 14, 2010, National Grocers fell short again with amendments to their offer to the Sudbury warehouse workers.
"I am encouraged to see that National Grocers made some positive changes to their offer, but they did fall short on the main issue at hand - severance," said Derik McArthur, RWDSU President.
With virtually no change to the monetary offer, the Union and the workers vow to keep fighting for a fair deal. "These workers are only asking for what workers in Southern Ontario and the Sudbury managers are receiving for severance. This is a matter of equality and fairness for Northern Ontario workers," stated McArthur.
The Federal NDP have also endorsed the union's efforts to secure a better severance package as Glenn Thibeault, MP for Sudbury, presented the union with a signed letter by the federal NDP caucus asking the company to do the right thing and offer a respectful severance package to the members of RWDSU.
"It's a shame that Loblaw is treating the workers this way after many years of long standing service," said Thibeault. "Hopefully, they'll realize the error of their ways and do the right thing so the workers can move on with their lives with the dignity and respect they deserve."
The NG Sudbury warehouse officially closed its doors on April 24th, 2010.
