National Gallery of Canada extends hours to view summer offering titled "Our Masterpieces, Our Stories"

OTTAWA, April 20, 2017 /CNW/ - To better serve its members and visitors, the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) is extending its hours of operation this summer, as of May 1, 2017. The new schedule will give visitors more time to enjoy the Gallery's exhibitions, the national collection and its programs of activities. The Gallery will open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. daily, except on Thursdays, when the Gallery will remain open until 8 p.m.

The NGC Boutique will continue to open at 10 a.m. and remain open for 30 minutes after the exhibition galleries close.

Today the Gallery also announced a new admission fee schedule that better reflects its operating costs. The new admission fees will take effect on May 1, 2017.

In an effort to encourage young people to visit more often, the Gallery has established a special rate of $7 for visitors 24 years and under, and for full-time students. There will be no charge for children age 11 and under. Entrance to the Gallery is free to all visitors on Thursdays, after 5 p.m.

NGC admission fees for 2017 provide access to all galleries and exhibitions. No additional special exhibition fees will be charged. Exhibition audio guide rental charges will decrease from $6 to $5

Admission to the Gallery will be free May 21 to mark International Museum Day; July 1 for Canada Day and on October 1 for Culture Days.

NGC admission fees have not changed since 2013. This new rate schedule will allow the Museum to cover the growing operating costs while continuing to provide stimulating exhibitions and programs for all ages.

On June 15, the Gallery will celebrate the opening of its new Canadian and Indigenous Galleries with special programming and free admission for all visitors on opening day. On that day, Gallery hours will be extended until 9:30 p.m.

The artwork on view in the new Canadian and Indigenous Galleries is part of the Gallery's summer offering titled "Our Masterpieces, Our Stories". The Canadian and Indigenous Galleries will feature works from time immemorial to 1967; the new installation in the Contemporary Galleries, opening May 3, will feature Canadian and Indigenous Art from 1968 to Present. Two new exhibitions that opened April 7 in the Canadian Photography Institute galleries complete the Our Masterpieces, Our Stories summer offer: Photography in Canada: 1960-2000 and PhotoLab 2: Women Speaking Art.
