MUSICACTION supports concerns of Heritage Minister James Moore and confirms that it did not subsidize Manu Militari's video L'Attente Français
MONTREAL, July 20, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - At an extraordinary summer session on July 17, 2012, the Board of Directors of Fondation MUSICACTION unanimously endorsed the concerns of Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore about the nature of musical productions that can receive subsidies. At the same time, the members of the Board received confirmation from the managers of MUSICACTION that the video L'Attente by artist Manu Militari did not at any time or in any way receive financial assistance from the organization. It was never even considered for assistance as it was never submitted to MUSICACTION.
Section 5.3 of the Contribution Agreement between MUSICACTION and Canadian Heritage is very clear about the projects eligible for financial support in the "New Musical Works" category: the projects must not contain any elements of gratuitous or serious violence or sexual exploitation and must not be obscene, indecent or pornographic within the meaning of the Criminal Code, or hateful, libellous or in any other way unlawful.
MUSICACTION will soon contact the members of the music industry it does business with to remind them of the conditions governing the financial support they receive and the consequences of failing to uphold the rules.
The Board would also like to point out that new musical works that receive financial assistance are approved before final production through a rigorous and proven process. This approach allows MUSICACTION to encourage the development of music and play an important role in Canada's artistic landscape.
MUSICACTION will not issue any further statements.
About MUSICACTION
Fondation MUSICACTION, a not-for-profit organization, was created in 1985 on the initiative of private radio broadcasters and recording and performance industry professionals. Its primary mission is to support the development of French-language music in Canada by offering financial support to independent record labels and Canadian artists. MUSICACTION provides stakeholders in the music industry with an array of tools that share the common goal of fostering the growth and circulation of truly Canadian musical creation. Through contribution agreements with Canadian Heritage, MUSICACTION administers the Francophone portion of two parts of the Canada Music Fund: New Musical Works and Collective Initiatives. MUSICACTIONS' support of these two areas is enhanced by contributions from private radio broadcasters. Since 2002, MUSICACTION has also managed the Fonds RadioStar, a fund that is 100% funded by private radio broadcasters to promote and market Francophone music from Canada.
