Movember Changes the Face of Canadian Men's Health One Moustache at a Time

    Movember's Third Annual Fight Against Prostate Cancer is Now Open for

TORONTO, Sept. 29 /CNW/ - Movember kicks off its third annual campaign in Canada today, challenging men across the country to show their support by growing a Mo (slang for moustache) this November. Starting today, men and women across the country can raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer Canada by registering at Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting Canadian men; during his lifetime, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with the disease, and this number is expected to rise to 1 in 4 within a decade.

"Prostate cancer is over 90 per cent curable if detected and treated in its earliest stages. In addition to investing in research, Movember raises awareness and ultimately saves lives," said Steve Jones, President and CEO, Prostate Cancer Canada. "Together we are changing the face of men's health."

Whether on their own or part of a team, male participants, known as Mo Bros, start the month of November with a clean shaven mug, then grow their stylish moustache throughout the month. This hairy ribbon is designed to start conversations about prostate cancer and men's health issues. Women, or Mo Sistas, aren't left out. They can help by getting the word out, recruiting Mo Bros to participate and collecting donations for Prostate Cancer Canada.

Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate the Mo at the end of November, attending Movember's costumed Gala Partés and vie for the title of Man of Movember and Miss Movember. Gala Partés will be held in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria. Details for these events will be posted on

"The moustache is our ribbon," said Movember Co-Founder and CEO Adam Garone. "If you don't normally have a moustache, you're compelled to explain your new look to everyone, which starts conversations about prostate cancer and men's health issues. We are very proud to have raised almost $3 million for Prostate Cancer Canada to date and look forward to seeing even more Mo growth in 2009."

Since its inception as a formal charity in 2004, Movember has raised over $51 million (CAD) globally and is continuously working to increase awareness of prostate cancer within the community and change the attitude men have about their health. Movember is the world's biggest event supporting men's health.
