Most Albertans Favour Private Cannabis Retail According to Legalize Private Retail's Public Opinion Research

CALGARY, Nov. 22, 2017 /CNW/ - Legalize Private Retail commissioned a public opinion research survey between November 10 and 15, 2017, to determine the level of support for private cannabis retail in Alberta. Key findings show that a majority of Albertans support private cannabis retail, confirming that the Government of Alberta made the right decision in adopting a private retail model for Alberta.

The research shows that initial support for private cannabis retail is 46%, but when Albertans are made aware of the level of government regulation and oversight that will exist in a private system, and the cost-savings from government not owning and operating stores, support increases to 59%.

"This research provides evidence for what we've known all along, Albertans want the government to ensure safeguards and collect taxes, and let the private sector take all the financial risk and focus on service, selection and experience" said Legalize Private Retail coalition member and Executive Vice President of Aurora Cannabis Cam Battley.

"The results of this research prove that the government has developed a real "Made in Alberta" solution to cannabis sales that keeps people safe but recognizes the importance of supporting Alberta businesses" said Legalize Private Retail coalition member and President of the Alberta-based 420 Clinic Jeff Mooij.

Legalize Private Retail commissioned an online survey of 803 Albertans, 18 years of age and older. The survey sample is proportionate to the distribution of Albertans, province-wide. Quotas were implemented to ensure proportionate representation of residents based on age and gender, reflective of the most up-to-date Census information available. The study was fielded from November 10th to 15th, 2017. The margin of error for a strict probability sample of 803 would be ±3.46 percent, 19 times out of 20.
