Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre Keynote Speaker at CFTAU Gala honouring Herbert Marx, Former Quebec Minister of Justice

MONTREAL, June 28, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Friends of Tel Aviv University (CFTAU) will be honouring Herbert Marx with a Gala evening on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at the newly renovated The Chevra venue, marking Tel Aviv University's (TAU) 60th Anniversary.

The Mayor of Montreal, the Honourable Denis Coderre, will be the keynote speaker on this milestone occasion. Mayor Coderre will receive TAU's prestigious President's Award, conferred by the University President, Prof. Joseph Klafter, for his exemplary leadership in building bridges among Montrealers and between communities, including the local and international Jewish community and the city of Montreal.

The Honourable Herbert Marx was a Canadian lawyer, law professor, Minister of Justice, Superior Court judge, and past President and longstanding member of the CFTAU Executive Committee. He was a member of the National Assembly of Quebec from 1979 – 1989. Born in Montreal in 1932, he graduated from Baron Byng High School, attended Concordia University, Université de Montréal and Harvard Law School. Throughout his law studies, he was awarded scholarships by the Quebec and Canadian Governments, received a number of prizes, and was awarded Prix du Barreau for taking first place in the Quebec Bar Exams in 1968.

The event kicks off at 5:30 PM with cocktails followed by dinner and a live auction which will feature, among other fantastic items, oneofakind enriching Tel Aviv University experiences.

YidLife Crisis will emcee this Gala.  Jamie Elman and Eli Batalion, entertainers and educators hailing from Montreal, hatched the world's first Yiddish sitcom for the web in 2014. Their unique friendship has spawned an irreverent labour of love by paying tribute to the Yiddish language, culture and comedic traditions. Their passion, embraced by both the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds, and 'comedy peacekeeping', keeps them working with celebrities and academics alike around the globe.

Funds raised at the Gala will support ongoing research and scholarship at Tel Aviv University, Israel's largest and most comprehensive institution of higher learning, and an industry leader in achievements and innovations.
