Sets Foundation to Drive Efficiencies and Cost-Savings for Canadian Healthcare Providers
TORONTO, May 9, 2012 /CNW/ - Mohawk Supply Chain Services, a division of Mohawk Shared Services, one of the largest healthcare Shared Services Organizations (SSO) in Ontario is adopting the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) as the common business language for product identification, and will be piloting the utilization of the ECCnet Registry, Canada's national product registry, to synchronize product data.
ECCnet Registry, managed by GS1 Canada, provides a single point of access to medical device, grocery, pharmacy and foodservice data, between trading partners. The pilot will demonstrate that healthcare provider members of Mohawk Supply Chain Services can leverage the ECCnet Registry to update their item master files with standardized, accurate, and perpetually cleansed product data.
"A hospital's item master file - which stores information about products - is the heart of its supply chain. As the SSO for 15 hospitals in Ontario, if one hospital item master file contains errors, our entire supply chain is negatively impacted," stated Susan Smith, General Manager, Mohawk Supply Chain Services. "By using ECCnet Registry, our members will have access to accurate and trusted product data for their item master files, offering the opportunity for decreasing supply chain costs, faster order cycles and enhanced patient safety."
The benefits of sharing standardized data through a centralized registry such as ECCnet Registry are felt along the healthcare supply chain. The use of standards enables sector-wide cost savings, as well as reduced labour and administrative efforts that result from manually correcting and updating bad data, enabling Ontario healthcare organizations to provide the highest quality patient care.
"Mohawk Supply Chain Services' leadership continues to emphasize the importance of global GS1 supply chain standards for enhancing the delivery and safety of healthcare services in the province", stated Alicia Duval, Senior Vice President, Healthcare & Pharmacy, GS1 Canada. "We encourage the healthcare sector to continue their global standards adoption efforts to support the province's fiscal responsibilities, enabling a sustainable healthcare system that provides the highest quality of care."
