OTTAWA, Nov. 20, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, today released the following statement to mark the sixth annual National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims:
"The safety and security of our transportation system is of the utmost importance to the Government of Canada. Today, we remember the lives lost due to road fatalities and offer our support to the families affected. On this occasion, I would like to extend my sympathies to all Canadians who have lost loved ones or been personally injured in such collisions.
"This day helps to raise awareness of the approximately 2,000 fatalities and 167,000 injuries from road crashes that occur every year in Canada.
"While the number of fatalities and injuries has been going down, more effort is required. Most traffic collisions are preventable. These tragedies affect all of us — including family, friends and colleagues of the victims. We need to work together to reduce these senseless losses. Making conscious choices — such as not drinking and driving, avoiding distractions, not speeding and always wearing a seat belt — can help improve road safety across the country.
"We are working hard to achieve our goal of improved road safety for the benefit of all Canadians."
The National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims website has downloadable decals, safe driving tips, statistics, an interactive "leave the phone alone" pledge form, virtual bouquets and teddy bears in the "Tribute to Victims" section that loved ones can post in memory of someone they lost in a crash.
