GATINEAU, QC, Dec. 5, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism, today marked International Volunteer Day by applauding the millions of Canadians who give generously of their time to volunteer and help others.
"I have seen the truly exceptional work volunteers do every day to support those in need, and for this we are all very thankful," said Minister Kenney. "Volunteers are a vital pillar of our society—helping to improve the well-being of Canadians and their communities."
The value of volunteers' time in Canada is equivalent to 1.1 million full-time jobs annually, with more than 13 million people volunteering their time through a group or organization. Volunteers provide a number of services, ranging from fundraising, to coaching children's sports teams, to supporting not-for-profit organizations.
Volunteer Canada's website, www.volunteer.ca, is a great source for information and helps match volunteers with volunteering opportunities. The Government encourages volunteerism by building partnerships across sectors and leveraging new ideas and sources of funding, such as in the New Horizons for Seniors Program and the Social Development Partnerships Program.
In 2012, the Government of Canada celebrated the first annual Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards, aimed at recognizing the exceptional contributions of volunteers, not-for-profit organizations and businesses to improving the well-being of Canadians and their communities.
