Minister Blaney and L'Envol High School Students Mark Veterans' Week

SAINT-NICOLAS, QC, Nov. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, took part in a commemorative ceremony at L'Envol High School in Saint-Nicolas today. It was the first ceremony of its kind that the students had organized with local Veterans in attendance. The event wrapped up the school's Remembrance Week, during which numerous speakers had talked with the students about major events from the conflicts of the past century and Canada's role in them.

"The students I had the opportunity to talk with today again proved to me that young people are very proud to take part in remembrance activities," said Minister Blaney. "These students had the opportunity to spend an entire week learning about our military history and the sacrifices our Veterans made for their country. It's an important opportunity for young Canadians. I am confident that the students at L'Envol will carry the torch of remembrance proudly."

L'Envol High School's remembrance week event received funding of up to $800 from the Veterans Affairs Canada Community Engagement Partnership Fund.

This year marks significant historical military milestones with the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the 95th anniversary of the capture of Passchendaele and the 70th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Each year, from November 5 to 11, Canadians join together to celebrate Veterans' Week.

This Veterans' Week, take time to remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting a local cenotaph or monument, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride. Learn more and find remembrance events and activities in your area at
