ST. JOHN'S, Dec. 2, 2014 /CNW/ - Devin Grant of St. John's has been selected as the 2015 Rhodes Scholar from Newfoundland and Labrador. The scholarship provides the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford, one of the top universities in the world. Mr. Grant, 22, is completing a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics at Memorial University, specializing in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computation. At Oxford he will pursue a Master of Science in Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computing. He contends that "at its core, everything is mathematics".
Mr. Grant has an exceptional academic record, with a perfect 4.0 GPA and numerous scholarships and awards, including the 2013 and 2014 Book Prize in Mathematics. He has been named to the Dean's List for the Faculty of Science in every year of his undergraduate studies.
Mr. Grant has been heavily involved in student affairs. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students' Union and is currently serving as the Union's Executive Director of Finance. He has also served as President of the United Nations Society at Memorial University.
Mr. Grant is a keen singer and has a long-term attachment to the Newman Sound Men's Choir as well as the Night Caps Vocal Ensemble; the latter of which he founded. He has participated in community musical productions, including the role of Prouvaire in Atlantic Light Theare's Les Miserables. As an avid chess player, Mr. Gant competed in six consecutive Canadian Chess Challenge National Finals. Other interests include musical productions, piano, and soccer.
The Rhodes Scholarship is an international postgraduate award for study at the University of Oxford. It is widely considered the world's most prestigious scholarship. Scholarship founder Cecil Rhodes stated that a scholar must exhibit: proven intellectual and academic attainment of a high standard, integrity of character, sympathy for and protection of the weak, the ability to lead and the energy to use their talent to the full.
