Member of Parliament Corneliu Chisu Announces Support for Alma Latina Magazine

PICKERING, ON, Dec. 13, 2013 /CNW/ - Corneliu Chisu, Member of Parliament (Pickering-Scarborough East), on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced support for Alma Latina magazine.

"This investment will help the digital periodical, Alma Latina, reach out to new audiences," said Mr. Chisu. "We are pleased to contribute to an organization that adds to the diverse reading choices for Canadians."

"Today's announcement demonstrates that our Government supports projects that not only enrich their community's cultural life but also strengthen its economy," said Minister Glover. "Thanks to Alma Latina magazine, Canada's Hispanic community, along with all interested readers, will continue to benefit from valuable cultural information."

"We are thrilled to have received funding from the Canada Periodical Fund to continue our work with Alma Latina Online Magazine, always aiming to be a bridge between Hispanic and mainstream Canadian culture," said Alma Sandoval Betancourth, Director. "With the help of this grant, we hope to begin our steady growth to one day become a strong voice for Hispanics not only in Durham Region, but throughout the GTA and Ontario and, one day, in all of Canada."

Alma Latina is an English and Spanish-language digital periodical that began in 2012 and showcases various aspects of Hispanic arts and culture. As a general interest magazine, Alma Latina appeals to a broad audience, including international readers.

The Government of Canada has provided $13,569 through the Business Innovation component of the Canada Periodical Fund. The Fund invests in periodicals to help increase the overall health of the Canadian magazine and non-daily newspaper industries. The Business Innovation component encourages innovation to adapt to changing market conditions and contributes to the diversity of content sought by Canadian readers.
