VICTORIA, BC, Oct. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - In an effort to bring further attention to the ongoing reductions to licensed professionals in the B.C. public service, members of the Professional Employees Association (PEA) will be holding rallies in cities across B.C. on Tuesday, October 16 between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm.
Members are seeking to stem the ongoing reductions of licensed professionals in the public service. "The number of licensed professionals employed by the province has decreased by 26% over the last decade and 10% in the last two years," said Scott McCannell, Executive Director of the PEA. "These professionals perform important roles necessary to the well-being and safety of British Columbians. The public should be concerned," said McCannell.
The contribution that PEA members make to the public interest is diverse. Professional engineers provide expert response to floods and landslides and keep bridges and roads safe. Registered psychologists counsel troubled youth. Licensed Veterinarians help prevent the transmission of disease. Professional foresters and professional agrologists provide independent, science-based perspectives that contribute to the stewardship of public forests and lands.
These rallies are intended to inform the public of the important role licensed professionals in the public service provide. This is the latest in a series of job action by the PEA that began with a 92 per cent strike vote in May. PEA members have been taking targeted strike action throughout the province in August and September. "Members are concerned for the sustainability of professional practice in the public service and are looking for a fair and reasonable deal that recognizes the importance of the work they bring to the province," said McCannell. PEA members have not had a wage increase since April 2009 and have been without a contract since March 31st.
