The Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau, Canada's Minister of International Development will speak tonight at the Toronto-based Journalists for Human Rights gala reception and dinner at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Toronto.
TORONTO, Oct. 1, 2018 /CNW/ - Bibeau is in town for the annual Night for Rights gala at the Hilton Hotel in Toronto, the annual fundraiser for Journalists for Human Rights (JHR).
The focus of the evening is JHR's powerful media development work in Africa.
The evening's keynote speakers are the Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, Masai Ujiri, President of the Toronto Raptors, and Prince Murhula of the Ecole Technique du Journalisme in Bukavu.
Minister of International Development Marie-Claude Bibeau will speak about Canada's feminist international assistance policy, the importance of free speech and role of media to cover tough issues including challenging social norms.
Masai Ujiri will speak about empowerment of women and youth across Africa: what works, in his view, his vision of Africa, and why he supports the work of Journalists for Human Rights.
Prince Murhula will speak about what it means to shore up the power of the press in one of the most dangerous environments in the world to be a journalist: the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
JHR will also be giving out, in partnership with the National Newsmedia Council, our second annual Fraser MacDougall Prize for Emerging Voices in Human Rights Reporting, to Jasnit Pabla and Nick Pearce of the Queen's Journal, with an honourable mention to Shrinkala Dawabi and Julia Dick of the McGill Tribune, and our fourth annual Human Rights Reporting Prize for Extraordinary Achievement in Human Rights Reporting.
Shortlisted journalists include Anna Mehler Paperny of Thomson Reuters, Jayme Poisson and David Bruser of the Toronto Star, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star and Paula Simons of the Edmonton Journal.
JHR is hosting a Night for Rights media call with Minister Bibeau at 4:30pm on October 1 at the Hilton Hotel, 145 Richmond Street West, Tundra Private Bar.
