TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2025 /CNW/ - Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) primary care members are on strike for a second week and will host a community rally outside their workplace to demand a fair first collective agreement that includes wage increases. Workers, patients and labour allies will be speaking to the importance of a fair contract and high-quality, timely primary care. The leader of the Ontario NDP, Marit Stiles, will be joining the picket later in the afternoon to support.
ONA notes that North York Family Health Team received additional government funding for retention and recruitment including wage increases but instead used it to make up for their own financial mismanagement. Other family health teams have used this funding for wage increases, to help bridge the significant gap in primary care compensation compared to other health sectors. Striking workers are calling on the NYFHT board to use the funds for fair wages so that they can afford to stay in their jobs.
Primary care workers at NYFHT provide comprehensive, preventative and immediate care to 95,000 patients in the Greater Toronto Area. After working under a multi-year wage freeze and subsequent increases below inflation, many are considering leaving to work in other health-care sectors where they are better paid for performing the same level of work.
