MEDIA ADVISORY - Day of Mourning 2026 Psychological health and safety must be treated with the same urgency as physical hazards Français
OTTAWA, ON, April 24, 2026 /CNW/ - Larry Rousseau, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress, will be speaking at the Ottawa District Labour Council's annual Day of Mourning ceremony on Tuesday, April 28th.
To mark the Day of Mourning, Canada's unions are calling for greater recognition of psychological health and safety as a fundamental workplace issue.
Here in Canada, psychological illness is now the leading cause of disability. Nearly half of working Canadians say their job is the most stressful part of their daily lives. These are not isolated challenges: they are systemic issues rooted in workplace conditions. These harms are preventable and not "just part of the job." Every worker has the right to a workplace that is safe – for both body and mind. Psychological injuries must be recognized in the same way as physical injuries, and psychological hazards must be identified and eliminated just like any other workplace risk.
