Local farmers, agricultural specialists, entrepreneurs and artists unite for the planet
TORONTO, July 15, 2013 /CNW/ - The Fairmount Park Farm Market is putting the planet first by incorporating sustainability principles into its mission statement, immediate plans are to go straw-free, provide a reusable bag depot and encourage rethink-reduce-reuse disposal practices, with a long term plan to be a complete Zero-Waste market. Sustainable and organic farming practices are already a priority to its market vendors and shoppers. The farm market will officially open on Wednesday July 17, 2013 with a ceremony at 3:30 p.m.
"I am so proud as both the MP for this riding and the Urban Affairs lead for my NDP caucus to represent a community that values the principles of sustainability so highly that it puts them into practice. As a neighbour and parent, I am thankful for the many dedicated volunteers who made this wonderful idea of a zero-waste market a reality for our community." Matthew Kellway, Member of Parliament, Beaches-East York
The farm market's emphasis on zero-waste production stems from a desire to be a responsible new neighbour in this east end community. As a weekly shopping ceremony, Fairmount Farm Market marries farm fresh produce and artisanal picnic fare, family-friendly activities, acoustic music, and unique eco services in an oasis-like setting that invites people to experience country in the city.
