Fourth edition of the winter tournament
MONTREAL, Feb. 21, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - The Fédération québécoise de combat médiéval invites journalists to the fourth edition of the Montreal medieval tournament taking place Saturday, February 21, and Sunday, February 22, at the Association sportive et communautaire du Centre-Sud. The facility will be transformed into an arena where warriors straight out of the Middle Ages will engage in swordplay.
This high-level tournament will feature more than 75 combatants from Quebec and Ontario as well as from the United States, including the reigning world champion team. Some of the top duelists will also be taking part, including Jeff Galli, world halberd champion and member of the US team, and Étienne Paquette, member of the Quebec team, who is ranked fourth in the world in long sword.
While not yet well known in Quebec, medieval combat is increasingly popular in Europe and the United States. The world championship event in Spain last May attracted more than 30,000 spectators. More than 1,000 people flocked to the last major tournament in North America, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Medieval combat originates in the tournaments of the Middle Ages. The combatants' armour alone can weigh up to 70 pounds, and the helmet can add another 20 pounds. The weapons are made of genuine steel. Spectators will also be able to enjoy historical reenactment presentation.
