Media Advisory - Ontario Nurses' Association Members Meet in Toronto: ONA members to discuss health-care issues, support women's shelter
TORONTO, Nov. 17, 2015 /CNW/ - Appoximately 250 registered nurse leaders from throughout the province will attend the Ontario Nurses' Association (ONA) Provincial Coordinators Meeting in Toronto this week to hear the latest updates on RN cuts, workplace violence and other issues of concern to RNs and the patients they care for.
The registered nurses will also attend an education session at the Sheraton Centre Hotel Toronto.
Among the topics to be discussed are the Price Report on Primary Care Reform, the strategy to end workplace violence, hospital funding freezes that have seen more than 625 RNs cut from our hospitals this year alone, and Professional Practice concerns.
The ONA members will also view a documentary made by ONA on the case of the workplace murder of Lori Dupont, RN. The murder occurred 10 years ago while Lori worked in the recovery room at Windsor's Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital. ONA has been seeking strengthened legislation, policies and procedures to protect RNs and their patients from violence ever since.
In addition, ONA will support of the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses (OAITH). ONA is supporting the organization's "Wrapped in Courage" campaign, which is part of its strategy to raise awareness about domestic violence and violence against women. November is Woman Abuse Awareness Month; ONA members will purchase purple OAITH scarves to support and raise awareness of OAITH's work. The Chair of the organization's board, Charlene Catchpole, will speak.
ONA President Linda Haslam-Stroud, RN is available for media interviews at select times.
ONA is the union representing 60,000 front-line registered nurses and allied health professionals as well as more than 14,000 nursing student affiliates providing care in Ontario hospitals, long-term care facilities, public health, the community, industry and clinics.
