TORONTO, Jan. 16, 2014 /CNW/ - Newspapers face sharp advertising declines, falling revenues and cuts in experienced staff, pages and content. Papers across the country have adopted paywalls in hopes that revenue from online will offset declines in print. But is it working?
Four senior executives will discuss the trends and assess what lies ahead when the The Canadian Journalism Foundation presents its next J-Talk at the TMX Broadcast Centre in Toronto on January 23.
Phillip Crawley, publisher and CEO of The Globe and Mail will share digital subscription numbers and explain the latest changes across the news outlet.
"The news outlets on this panel are all approaching the challenges we face quite differently," says Crawley. "For the Globe, our changes are taking place in every department: for example, we are shifting away from photographers to videographers and graphic designers; and our bonus incentive program for editorial managers, which is tied to analytics, is the only one of its kind that I know. And while La Presse doesn't believe in print, or charging for premium content, we do."
Crawley will be joined on the panel by John Cruickshank, publisher of the Toronto Star; Gerry Nott, senior vice-president of the eastern region, Postmedia Network/National Post; and André Pratte, editorial pages editor of La Presse. Joshua Benton, director of the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University, moderates this discussion.
