Media Advisory - Black Lives Matter and legal counsel Saron Gebresellassie to unveil multilingual legal support services available to asylum seekers fleeing the United States Français
LACOLLE, QC, Jan. 13, 2018 /CNW/ - On the eve of Martin Luther King Day, Black Lives Matter and legal counsel Saron Gebresellassie will convene a press conference at the Canada-U.S. Border in Lacolle to unveil multilingual legal support services available to asylum seekers fleeing the United States.
In May 2017, the Trump Administration announced it would end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Haitian migrants by July 2019, forcing approximately 60,000 Haitian migrant parents, children and families to leave the United States. For so many Haitians their only options are to flee or face deportation. Since the announcement was made, thousands of Haitians have crossed into Canada at the Lacolle border and continue to face daily arrest and detention at the hands of the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agents. This is the largest mass arrest of civilians ever on Canadian soil with reports of approximately 16,000 Haitian people arrested in eight months.
