Marci Ien to Lead George Brown Foundation, Inspiring a New Chapter of Community, Opportunity and Student Success
TORONTO, Oct. 1, 2026 /CNW/ -- The George Brown Foundation is pleased to welcome former federal cabinet minister and veteran broadcaster Marci Ien as its new President, ushering in an exciting new chapter focused on community, connection and expanding opportunities for students.
As former Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Youth and a long-time television journalist, Ien has built her career on connecting people through their stories, amplifying diverse voices and strengthening communities. Her experience building relationships with individuals from all walks of life will help strengthen connections with students, donors, alumni, industry partners and supporters, enriching the George Brown community and advancing the Foundation's mission to create opportunities for student success.
The George Brown Foundation plays a vital role in supporting students through scholarships, bursaries, emergency assistance and food security initiatives. In 2025-2026, the Foundation raised over $6.3 million in support of George Brown students, including over $2 million in scholarship awards.
"Marci brings a remarkable ability to connect with people and a deep commitment to service," said Dr. Gervan Fearon, President of George Brown Polytechnic. "She understands the transformative power of education and the importance of community. Her leadership will help us build new partnerships, strengthen existing relationships and create even more pathways to success for our students."
"On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome Marci to the George Brown Foundation," said Erin Griffiths, Chair, George Brown Foundation Board of Directors. "Marci's ability to connect people, champion community and build relationships will be invaluable as we expand opportunities for students and strengthen the Foundation's impact."
As she begins her role, Ien is focused on listening and learning from the George Brown community, including students, donors, alumni, partners and supporters.
"I'm honoured to join the George Brown Foundation and begin this new chapter alongside such an inspiring community," said Marci Ien, President of the George Brown Foundation. "George Brown students are ambitious, talented and determined to make a difference in the world. My hope is that we can bring people together in support of their dreams, opening doors and creating opportunities that help them reach their full potential."
"I'm looking forward to listening and learning from our students, donors, sponsors and community partners. I want to understand what matters most to them, what we are doing well, and how we can do even better. Together, we can deepen existing partnerships, foster new connections and expand our impact so that more students have the support they need to succeed."
