MONTREAL, Feb. 28, 2017 /CNW/ - March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness about colorectal cancer. It is a month where we proudly honour individuals who have been touched by the disease.
Colorectal cancer is Preventable, Treatable, and Beatable, yet it is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in Canada. It can affect anyone, young or old, male or female. Although the disease is more commonly found in individuals 50 years and older, many young people are also touched by the disease, particularly those with Lynch syndrome. Our Never Too Young (N2Y) campaign reaches out to this young population with information, education and support.
Colorectal cancer is a preventable cancer, yet so many individuals are unaware of how it can be prevented. Consequently, CCAC programs and campaigns are designed with a common goal in mind; to raise awareness of colorectal cancer and how it may be prevented with timely screening and healthy lifestyles.
This March, we are celebrating the success of our Foods That Fight Cancer (FTFC) program under the direction of Dr. Richard Béliveau. In collaboration with the students of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the department of Nutrition of Université de Montréal, a special educational workshop will be held at 4095 Saint-Andre, Montreal, on March 17th at 9:30am and March 22nd at 2:00pm to promote colorectal cancer prevention and FTFC with exciting new recipes.
On March 3rd, you can help support the CCAC and our patients by organizing a "Dress in Blue" Day at your work place. By dressing in Blue and raising funds for important CCAC programs, you will be spreading awareness of the disease, supporting patients and their families. By supporting the CCAC, not only are you becoming part of the fight against cancer, you are helping the CCAC develop important programs and support for patients across the country who struggle to meet the challenges of this disease. "Patients now have more options to treat this disease than ever before. New treatments may completely change the manner in which we treat this disease. I am more optimistic than ever before that we can prolong lives longer and ultimately find a cure", said Barry D. Stein, president of the CCAC.
"Prevention and early diagnostics are key to the fight against colorectal cancer. Awareness and understanding of this disease is therefore a critical factor to help reduce the disease burden on patients, their loved ones and our healthcare system. It is imperative that we get the word out!", said Martin Gagnon, president of the Coalition Priorité Cancer au Québec.

Colorectal cancer - cancer of the colon or rectum - is the second leading cause of cancer deaths overall in men and women in Canada. Though highly preventable and curable when detected early, an estimated 26,100 Canadians were diagnosed with colorectal cancer last year.
