WINNIPEG, Feb. 3, 2014 /CNW/ - Folks gathered under the canopy at The Forks yesterday to celebrate the launch of the capital campaign for Manitoba's newest facility for children and youth with special needs - The SSCY (Specialized Services for Children and Youth) Centre. The highlight of the event included an open-skate with musical performance from one of Winnipeg's most-loved entertainers, Fred Penner.
Those in attendance took part in a number of other festivities, including face painting, balloon making, an interactive photo booth, live DJ and more. Toronto-Dominion Bank presented a cheque for $100,000 to help fund enhancements for the centre.
Upon completion of construction in 2016, The Christie's Biscuit Building on Notre Dame Avenue will become the new home of The SSCY Centre. The centre will provide services for Manitoba, eastern Saskatchewan, north west Ontario and Nunavut.
"The SSCY Centre will be a space for families with children and youth living with special needs, allowing access to a wide range of services in one central place. It's what the families have wished for and we're excited to see it become a reality," says Bob Adkins, Campaign Co-Chair.
"For these families, getting from one appointment to the next can be a disheartening task. Imagine the difficulties of travelling in the blowing snow, by bus or van, from one side of the city to the next. Now imagine a place where all of these services are combined. That's the magic of The SSCY Centre." To date, the SSCY Centre Capital Campaign has raised $2.6 million, a benchmark for the $5 million goal. The purpose of their fundraising is to fund special enhancements for the centre, including audiology equipment, daycare furnishing equipment, an interior courtyard and much more.
