Lowe's stores to serve as official Red Cross donation sites
Company challenges customers to donate for relief
TORONTO, Jan. 15 /CNW/ - Lowe's Companies Canada, ULC, a subsidiary of Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE: LOW), announced today that all 16 stores across Canada will serve as cash donation sites for the Canadian Red Cross to support earthquake relief in Haiti. Lowe's challenges its customers to stop by their local Lowe's store to make a donation to aid relief on the island nation. The Government of Canada will match Haiti relief contributions to the Canadian Red Cross from individuals received by Feb. 12th up to a total of $50 million.
"Millions of people are suffering and have been displaced by the wide-spread destruction of Haiti's recent earthquake," said Robert A. Niblock, Lowe's chairman and CEO. "Among those millions are the families and friends of many of our customers and employees. Lowe's customers have always been extremely generous in responding to disaster relief efforts, so we are asking them to once again partner with us by contributing one dollar at a time to help our international neighbours begin the recovery process."
"Canadians have a proud history of being a good global neighbour, reaching out in times of crisis. Our support of the Canadian Red Cross is a natural extension of that compassion, and Lowe's Canada employees enthusiastically support their work," added Alan Huggins, president of Lowe's Canada.
Lowe's efforts in Canada are in conjunction with a $1 million donation the company announced it is making to the American Red Cross. All Lowe's U.S. stores will also serve as cash donation sites for the American Red Cross. Since partnering with the Red Cross in 1999, Lowe's and its customers have contributed more than $20.1 million for disaster relief.
The Canadian Red Cross has already committed $200,000 to the immediate relief efforts and is deploying additional personnel and resources to help meet the needs of those affected. Donations to the Canadian Red Cross may be made at Lowe's Canada stores, online at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-418-1111 or a local Red Cross office.
