TORONTO, Jan. 30, 2014 /CNW/ - Three local programmers tried to make picking Winterlicious dishes easier by asking every participating restaurant's chef recommendation. After hundreds of calls, peeking over 3000 menu items, and a weekend of coding, they put their findings together on a website, www.dishmash.ca along with some interesting statistics.
The data offers interesting insight into Toronto's food tastes, as well as into what each restaurant considers to be their top dish. The most frequent word on the menus appear to be "vegetarian", while "tomato" is the most popular ingredient, "chicken" appears to be four times more popular than "beef", and "chocolate" is the most popular dessert ingredient. Many of the restaurants provided chefs' or owners' top dish recommendations for their Winterlicious menus, offering an additional insight into what is the signature dish of every participating restaurant.
The project idea came after one of the authors had trouble picking out a dish in a new restaurant. The project is not meant to be a moneymaking venture, as its creators simply hope to bring value to fellow Torontonians.
