LANGLEY, BC, May 14, 2014 /CNW/ - On Sunday, May 25, 2014, local soccer players will gather to compete and play for a unique event called The Epic 5v5 World Cup soccer tournament held at Walnut Grove Secondary School to raise funds for an inner city soccer academy, Futebol Atos, in Ipatinga, Brazil – the host country of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
This community event, organized by Cornerstone, a community development strategy within Athletes in Action (AIA), features a day of soccer, food, and fun along with an opportunity to help raise funds for shipping much needed soccer equipment to Ipatinga and sponsoring local kids to be a part of the academy. Ipatinga is home to former Trinity Western University soccer player and current Langley United Premier player Andre Costa, who, along with a group of 50 men and women players from around North America, will travel there this summer on an international tour to support and work alongside Futebol Atos in the local community.
The Epic 5v5 World Cup tournament is open to men and women athletes over 17 years of age of all skill levels. Players will be organized into teams of 5-8 and compete against other teams in small sided eight-minute games to Pugg goals (no keepers).
