The Canadian Cancer Society wants men to paint their nails pink
TORONTO, Oct. 1, 2014 /CNW/ - This October, the Canadian Cancer Society and THE TEN SPOT Beauty Bars are challenging men across the province to paint their nails pink in support of the ManiCURES campaign which raises money for the fight against breast cancer.
Taking part in ManiCURES is easy. Challenge a guy to paint his nails pink for a day. Then simply create an online fundraising page at cancer.ca/ManiCURES and set a fundraising goal. Once he reaches his fundraising goal, it's time for his nails to get painted.
Women can also take part in ManiCURES by heading to a THE TEN SPOT Beauty Bar or one of 45 other participating salons across the province to get a cancer-fighting manicure. THE TEN SPOT will also donate $1 to the Canadian Cancer Society from each pink manicure done at any of its 14 franchise locations.
ManiCURES participants are encouraged to share photos of their cancer-fighting manicures using the hashtag #pinkmaniCURE.
"THE TEN SPOT is proud to support the Canadian Cancer Society's ManiCURES fundraising campaign and we're thrilled to be a part of the work that they're doing in not only finding a cure but providing support services for women currently living with breast cancer," says Kristen Wood, CEO and Creator, THE TEN SPOT. "Our participation is a way to show our support and help raise awareness for this very important cause."
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian women and, this year, more than 24,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with the disease. Today, 88% of Canadian women diagnosed with breast cancer will survive.
"At the Canadian Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than raising awareness, it's about taking action to save lives," says Susan Drodge, Director of Corporate and Community Partnerships for the Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario. "Close to 24,000 lives have been saved since the mid-1980s, thanks in part to the Society's efforts to increase breast screening rates and investments in research. Our ability to help women is made possible only through generous donations and fundraising efforts such as ManiCURES."
Money raised through ManiCURES will fund breast cancer research, advocacy, education about breast screening and support services for patients and their families.
In the last 20 years, the Canadian Cancer Society has invested close to $100 million in breast cancer research, leading to earlier detection and better therapies, which in part has led to a 43% drop in the breast cancer death rate since the 1980s.
The Society also fights breast cancer through its Women to Women and Screening Saves Lives initiatives, which provide women with the information and support they need to get mammograms. To help people living with breast cancer cope with the disease, the Canadian Cancer Society offers information and support services. The charity is also challenging the Ontario government to reduce the financial burden and distress that cancer patients and their families can face during treatment.
