Lawyers Representing London Mayor and Six Councillors Fundamentally Disagree with Ombudsman's Report

TORONTO, Oct. 22, 2013 /CNW/ - The Ombudsman released his Final Report "In the Back Room" this morning which sets out his findings on the investigation of whether the Mayor and six members of Council held an illegal meeting.

Lawyers for the Mayor and six councillors, Christopher Williams and John Mascarin of Aird & Berlis LLP, provided detailed comments on a Preliminary Report earlier distributed which have been largely ignored in the Final Report.

For the reasons set out in detail in the letter to the Ombudsman dated September 27, 2013 (attached as Appendix A to the Final Report), councillors' lawyers strongly disagree that any violation of the Municipal Act, 2001 open meeting provisions occurred.

The Ombudsman's conclusions reflect a substantive misapprehension of what constitutes a meeting and a flawed application of the facts to the law.

Christopher Williams and John Mascarin will be available to answer questions following the Ombudsman's press conference at 1 p.m. today.
