EllisDon Ledcor PAAV Inc. turns over West Don Lands site in preparation for the largest sporting event in Canada's history
MISSISSAUGA, ON, March 2, 2015 /CNW/ - The CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes' Village has been turned-over to the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015), five months ahead of the hotly anticipated multi-sport event. The $514 million development will accommodate 10,000 athletes, coaches, and officials from 41 competing nations between July 10th and August 15th.
Built by EllisDon Ledcor PAAV Inc. — part of the Dundee Kilmer Developments consortium selected by Infrastructure Ontario — this staggering project included the construction of seven new mid-rise buildings on the 35-acre West Don Lands site. Following the Games, the area will be transformed into the mixed-use Canary District Community, a vibrant new neighbourhood that will boast market condos and townhomes, affordable rental housing, retail space, the Cooper Koo Family YMCA, and George Brown College's first student residence.
Apart from meeting the design requirements of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), this village was built to meet LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification standards, and is strategically positioned steps from the Distillery District, and approximately 25 minutes from Toronto Pearson International Airport.
"We are thrilled to add this outstanding work to our long list of flagship projects," said Kieran Hawe, EllisDon Vice President/Area Manager, Toronto Operations. "In transforming an underutilized site into a highly diverse and sustainable hub, we claim this new waterfront community as a major triumph for ourselves, and for the city of Toronto."
"We were proud to partner with EllisDon — and be a part of the Dundee Kilmer Development team — to construct this world-class facility," said Mark Johnson, Senior Vice President, Ledcor Construction. "Each company provided a unique and invaluable contribution to the project, which is destined to become one of the defining legacies of this summer's Games."
Expected to attract 250,000 tourists, and create 5,200 new jobs across the city, this remarkable project is sure to be a lasting success story.
