Labourers win big over Carpenters at Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board
HAMILTON, ON, Oct. 1, 2012 /CNW/ - Today, employees of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board finally learned the results of a hotly contested vote to decide which labour union would represent them. Labourers Local 837 was victorious by a stunning margin of 107 to 26 over the Carpenters Union, Local 2220.
Custodians and maintenance employees voted on September 7th, but procedural wrangling at the Ontario Labour Relations Board delayed the results from being known until today. The Carpenters Union had fought opening the ballot box, but was overruled today at the Board.
Labourers Local 837 Executive Board Member David Finnerty was thrilled with the overwhelming vote of confidence, "We are deeply honoured to have the ongoing trust of the employees of the school board. It has been a privilege to represent these members and we appreciate this affirmation."
Local 837 has represented the employees at the school board since 1995 but was recently challenged by the Carpenters Union.
