As BC legislation requires large emitters to report their GHG emissions, KPMG enhances its credentials as independent third-party verifier of choice.
VANCOUVER, Oct. 13 /CNW/ - KPMG LLP announced today that the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has awarded KPMG Performance Registrar Inc. its initial ISO 14065 accreditation. KPMG Performance Registrar Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of KPMG that provides Environmental Management and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Assurance services. The accreditation demonstrates that KPMG's GHG Assurance Program meets the best recognized test of quality in the sector.
"With the impending requirement for large emitters to report their GHG emissions for the year ended December 31, 2010, and to have those reports audited, we felt it was important that we be able to provide our clients with a recognized accredited audit service," explained Chris Ridley-Thomas, President of KPMG Performance Registrar Inc.
In British Columbia, reporting operations outside the public sector that emit more than 10,000 tonnes of CO2e will be required to report 2010 emissions in 2011, and annually thereafter. The British Columbia GHG emissions reporting regulation also requires any BC business facility that emits 25,000 tonnes or more of CO2e per year to complete a third-party audit of their annual emissions report.

The BC Ministry of Environment estimates that 160 to 200 BC facilities are required to file reports, and 80 to 100 of those are required to have third-party audits.
As carbon markets develop in North America, the need is growing for reliable assurance programs that provide credibility to emissions reporting and trading programs. ISO 14065 is the best recognized process for demonstrating that GHG assurance programs are credible and is required by both voluntary programs, such as the Climate Action Reserve (CAR), The Climate Registry (TCR), the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), and emerging regulated programs.
Other Canadian jurisdictions that have similar reporting requirements include Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. KPMG's accreditation is valid across all of the jurisdictions in which it operates.
