VANCOUVER, Feb. 16, 2012 /CNW/ - In an effort to raise funds to combat pediatric cancer, the Sears Great Canadian Chill challenges everyone in the Lower Mainland to participate in an energizing and meaningful swim into cool waters on February 18, 2012. The first annual BC Chill aims to raise funds that will support research to help find a cure for pediatric cancer. Monies raised at this Polar Bear Swim will support pediatric cancer-focused research through the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation and will be directed to the BC Children's Hospital (BCCH).
"This is the perfect time for Canadians to literally make a splash in their efforts to help children living with cancer and their families," said Calvin McDonald, President and CEO, Sears Canada Inc. "The Sears Great Canadian Chill is a great way for people of all ages to get involved in this meaningful and worthwhile cause. Canadians can log on to www.TheChill.ca, register on their own, with friends or with family members and make a meaningful contribution to the fight against this devastating disease," continued McDonald.
"Chillers" will have the opportunity to rush into the chilly waters of English Bay at Second Beach in Stanley Park, Vancouver on February 18th. As part of the invigorating event, live entertainment, food and family-friendly activities will be provided, adding to the festivities. As well, prizes will be awarded for the best costume and top fundraiser.
Since 2008, Sears has been title sponsor of events that have raised over $4.3 million in support of finding a cure for children's cancer. In 2010, the Sears Canada Charitable Foundation made a multi-year, $5 million commitment towards the completion of a state-of-the-art cancer clinic and the funding of The Sears Childhood Cancer Fellowship.
Added Mr. McDonald, "By participating in The Sears Great Canadian Chill, Canadians can help give hope to the thousands of children who suffer from cancer across the country."
