In honour of the many women who have lost their lives, including 2 women in the past year, to gender-based violence in Peel Region
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Aug. 27, 2015 /CNW/ - On Sunday August 30th, 2015 Interim Place will host its "4th Annual Steps to End Violence Against Women Walk", to honour and remember the women that lost their lives to violence in Peel including Evelyn Castillo and Sharifya Birkett, who lost their lives to violence this past year as well as to honour the many women and children that have walked through Interim Place's doors since their doors opened in 1981.
The Walk which begins at J.C. Saddington Park in Port Credit, will raise awareness about the issue of Violence Against Women in Peel and raise funds for Interim Place to provide emergency shelter and support services to women and children fleeing violence.
Sharon Floyd, Executive Director of Interim Place, says:
"Women in our community face daily sexual, physical and emotional violence. Violence against women is a serious, pervasive problem that crosses every social boundary and continues to have significant adverse impacts on the lives of women and children and their families. It is hard to comprehend in 2015 that on average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. In the past year alone, Interim Place has supported over 800 women through our shelters and outreach programs. Let's continue work together to end violence against women in our community as together we can make a change."
Please visit the website to register to walk or donate today.
