OTTAWA, Oct. 2, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, Ms. Julie Payette will be installed as the 29th governor general of Canada.
This momentous day will start with the installation ceremony inside the Senate Chamber, on Parliament Hill, and will be followed by military honours and the inspection of a guard of honour outside of Parliament. Ms. Payette will then lay flowers at the National War Memorial, before arriving at Rideau Hall, the official residence and workplace of the governor general in Ottawa. The day will conclude with an evening reception at the Canadian Museum of History.
On this occasion, the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is pleased to unveil Ms. Payette's official photo and coat of arms. The photo was taken at Rideau Hall, in front of Glenn Gould's practice piano.
The coat of arms of Ms. Payette includes a wing to represent the ideas of exploration and liberty, a bar of music to represent creativity, and two lynx as symbols of agility. The Royal Crown indicates her role as The Queen's representative in Canada. The original concept was created by the Canadian Heraldic Authority, which is headed by the governor general. All governors general since Confederation have used coats of arms. These personal emblems have featured in the designs of their privy seals, as well as of the Governor General's Academic Medal, since 1873.
Canadians will be able to watch the installation ceremony live on Facebook and on major television networks. To follow the developments of the day, we invite them to search for and use the hashtag #GG29.
