Inner City School students help reclaim rural aggregate pit

R. M. OF SPRINGFIELD, Manitoba, Sept. 26, 2012 /CNW/ - With the help of grade five, six, seven and eight students from David Livingstone Community School in the Inner City of Winnipeg, Qualico and the Manitoba Forestry Association are reforesting an aggregate pit located by the Hillside Transfer Station in the RM of Springfield. The tree-planting event saw the students plant approximately 1,000 white spruce of the 10,000 trees that will be planted in the pit.

"Last year, we involved Machray School in our Planting for the Future program, and the response was so positive from not only the students but their parents and teachers that we wanted to provide students from other inner city schools the same opportunity" said John Daniels, Regional Vice-President of the Qualico. "Qualico is committed to building communities that provide healthy and sustainable environments, and involving city students in a rural Manitoba tree planting initiative provides a wonderful learning experience about an environment they may not be that familiar with."

Not only did the students plant the white spruce, but were introduced to various foresty management practices by representatives of the Manitoba Forestry Association and treated to lunch.

"We were very excited to be invited to assist with Qualico's Planting for the Future program" said Nadine Horsman of David Livingstone Community School. "It gives our students a real appreciation of how they can be a real influence on the natural landscape and how important it is to be good stewards of the environment".

With this year's tree planting, Qualico has now planted over 65,000 trees in locations throughout the province and in the City of Winnipeg as part of its 100,000 tree Planting for the Future initiative.
