Medisys' genetic counsellor, Katherine Hodson, explains how to get the answers you need about genetic testing
TORONTO, Nov. 22, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Recently, several high-profile media stories have shone a spotlight on genetics and genetic testing. With A-list celebrities documenting their choice to undergo genetic testing, and with so much information in the media, many people have questions about how genetics relates to their own health. Fortunately, genetic counselling can help real people make sense of genetics. From November 17 to 23, 2013, the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) is campaigning to increase awareness of genetic counselling across Canada. "We want Canadians to know that the genetic counselling profession is dedicated to helping people better understand an often confusing, scientific and emotional subject," says Julie Rutberg, President of the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors.
About genetic counselling
Anyone who has wondered about whether they may be at risk for a health condition that is in their family, or would like more information about the type of information genetic testing may provide can benefit from genetic counselling. Genetic counsellors are specialized health professionals, with training in genetics and counselling, who can review the chances that an illness in a family may have a hereditary component, discuss options for genetic testing, and provide guidance and support during the decision-making process. And the service is for anyone—if someone is concerned about their family history, or who wants to know more about genetic testing, they can speak to their doctor about meeting with a genetic counsellor.
About the CAGC
The Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors was incorporated in 1990 with the goal of promoting high standards of practice, facilitating and supporting professional growth, and increasing public awareness of the genetic counselling profession in Canada.
