Impact 17 theatre festival opens in Kitchener today
KITCHENER, ON, Sept. 26, 2017 /CNW/ - Canada's premier theatre festival of culturally diverse works kicks off in Kitchener today.
Impact 17 runs Sept. 26 - Oct. 1, 2017, in Waterloo Region, Ontario, with 60 performances by artists normally sidelined in Canada's theatre community.
It's a festival where entertainment and spectacle mix freely with the idea that theatre can change the world.
"To me, socially irrelevant theatre is not entertaining at all," said Impact 17 artistic director Majdi bou-Matar. "I love theatre that speaks to the community, that reflects the community. That's why Impact 17 presents works by Indigenous artists, immigrant artists, refugee artists, LGBTQ artists. The shows can be fun or sad or hilarious, but always relevant."
Impact 17 includes the ground-breaking international work,The Raft, about a group of refugees on the open sea, based in part on chilling first-hand accounts.
