Kullman, a Bellingham resident who passed away after a battle with leukemia, has donated a rich collection of 20th century photographs to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

After attending an Ansel Adams exhibit in 1975, Kullman purchased the first piece in what would become a world-class collection. Now, thanks to the generosity of Kullman and his family, the Hutchinson Center is home to 47 masterworks by photographers such as Adams, Edward Weston and Robert Mapplethorpe. The images are all signed and range in subject from landscapes to portraits to still lifes.

Kullman was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2003. While receiving treatment at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance under a Hutchinson Center research protocol, he and his wife, Merrilee Kullman, spent eight months in Seattle before returning to their home. He passed away in 2006.

"Both of our lives were touched in so many ways by the outstanding care Freddy received," Merrilee said. "We were eager to find a way to 'pay back' the Hutch for all that was done for Fred during a difficult course of treatment. We decided donating the photography collection was the best way to share this special collection with the most people."

It was the hope of the Kullmans and the Kullman Family Trust that everyone on the Center campus--faculty, staff, visitors, and patients and their families--would have the opportunity to view and enjoy the photographs.

"They're outstanding," said Charlotte Reed, Hutchinson Center Art Committee member and daughter of Center founder William Hutchinson, M.D. "We are so lucky to be able to see and share them every day."

At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, our interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists and humanitarians work together to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
