Be aware and be prepared!
EDMONTON, May 2, 2016 /CNW/ - This Emergency Preparedness Week, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is encouraging families to take action to prepare themselves and their families for emergencies.
"The frequency and severity of severe weather events have increased over the past few years, making it even more important to be prepared for a disaster," said Bill Adams, Vice-President, Western & Pacific, IBC. "Think about and prepare for the worst-case scenario. You'll have peace of mind knowing that if there is a severe weather event, you can react quickly and keep your loved ones safe."
IBC's Top 10 tips to prepare your family for an emergency are:
- Create an emergency preparedness plan.
- Assemble disaster safety kits for your home, car and office.
- Be sure to have at least 2 litres of drinking water per person a day for up to 72 hours.
- Know your home's exits and nearby safe meeting locations.
- Speak with your neighbours to plan ahead and share responsibilities.
- Compile contact lists for work and school as well as for attending to any special health care needs.
- Prepare a detailed home inventory.
- If you will be away for an extended amount of time, have someone check your property daily. In the winter, ask someone to clear the snow from the walk and driveway.
- Put all important documents in a safe place and ensure they are accessible if you need to evacuate.
- Ask your insurance representative about coverage for specific weather-related events.

Alberta experiences more extreme weather events than anywhere else in Canada. In 2015, more than 80% of large weather-related insurance claims were made in Alberta.
