Company recognized for first time with national award for supporting the leaders of tomorrow
OTTAWA, April 29, 2014 /CNW/ - As part of MediaCorp's Canada's Top Employers competition, Hydro Ottawa has been recognized for its commitment to engaging young talent in the workplace as one of Canada's Top Employers for Young People for 2014.
Hydro Ottawa makes it a priority to provide meaningful opportunities for young people in order for them to gain valuable work experience and for the company to prepare for the workforce of tomorrow. It does this through comprehensive summer and coop student programs, apprenticeships, and partnerships with local post-secondary institutions - all of which are focused on ensuring young workers know the experience they build within the organization is central to the future of the organization.
Being recognized as one of the Top Employers for Young People is a very meaningful accomplishment. Combined with the award received last week in which Hydro Ottawa was highlighted as a Best Employer for 50-Plus Workers, Hydro Ottawa is well prepared for the demographic challenges that the industry faces in the short- and medium-term.
- In 2013, Hydro Ottawa hired 60 students, growing its workforce by nine per cent.
- Hydro Ottawa delivers The Student Apprentice - a half-day program that offers students an opportunity to present "value-added" ideas to the organization.
- Hydro Ottawa partners with Algonquin College to provide training to students enrolled in the two-year powerline technician diploma program.
- Hydro Ottawa offers in-house apprenticeship programs for powerline maintainers, cable jointers, station electricians, meter technicians, and system operators. It also manages an engineer intern training and development program.
| "With almost 42 per cent of our workforce set to retire within the next ten years, we know that our young employees represent the future of our organization. Our programs for younger workers were shaped in order to create meaningful experiences, helping these employees contribute to the organization and our community early in their careers."
