TORONTO, April 4, 2016 /CNW/ - The Honourable Howard Wetston, Q.C. is joining Goodmans as Counsel effective April 4, 2016.
Mr. Wetston is an esteemed public servant and lawyer, widely known for his expertise in competition law and policy, securities regulation, energy regulation and administrative law. He served as the Chair and CEO of the Ontario Securities Commission from 2010 to 2015, where his influence extended far beyond the province's borders. Under his leadership, the OSC introduced a series of landmark initiatives including advancing the participation of women on boards and in senior management, exempt market reform, takeover bid reform and an enhanced enforcement program. In the words of the province's Minister of Finance, Howard "elevated the OSC's reputation around the world" as a Vice Chair of the International Organization of Securities Commissions.
Prior to his recently completed term at the OSC, Mr. Wetston was Chair and CEO of Ontario Energy Board. He previously served as a Trial Judge at the Federal Court of Canada and was the Director of Investigations & Research (now Commissioner of Competition) at the federal government's Bureau of Competition Policy.
In January 2016, the C.D. Howe Institute appointed Mr. Wetston as a Senior Fellow. He is also a member of several Advisory Boards, including the Program on Ethics in Law and Business at the University of Toronto and the Shannon School of Business at Cape Breton University. He was recently appointed as a Trustee of the International Valuations Standards Council.
Mr. Wetston holds an LL.B. from Dalhousie University, a B.Sc. from Mount Allison University and honorary doctorate degrees from Cape Breton University and Dalhousie University. He is admitted to practice in Nova Scotia, Ontario and Alberta.
