House of Commons Special Committee on Electoral Reform launches national consultation

OTTAWA, Sept. 19, 2016 /CNW/ - On Monday September 19, 2016, the Special Committee on Electoral Reform will launch its cross-Canada tour to consult broadly with Canadians to identify viable alternate voting systems to replace the first-past-the-post system. The Special Committee will use this opportunity to hold formal hearings and public sessions where Canadians can share their views on electoral reform, online voting and mandatory voting. The opinions and comments from individuals and organizations will not only improve the Special Committee's understanding of the issues involved, but also assist in preparing its report to the House of Commons by December 1, 2016.

Quick Facts

  • The Committee's mandate was set out in a motion adopted by the House of Commons on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.
  • As of September 2, 2016, the Special Committee has held 23 substantive meetings and heard from nearly 60 witnesses, including the Minister of Democratic Institutions and the Chief Electoral Officer. Read transcripts of meetings.

"Through this tour, our committee will have the opportunity to hear directly from Canadians from across the country about the kind of voting system they feel is best suited to Canada's democracy in the 21st century. I look forward to working with colleagues from across all parties as we gather the diverse views, opinions, and expertise of Canadians. Together, it will be a vital component in our committee's future deliberations on electoral reform."

- Francis Scarpaleggia, Chair, Special Committee on Electoral Reform
