Hotwire Unveils Annual List of Top 10 Destinations for Canada Day
Canadian Cities Continue to Lead in Popularity for the Patriotic July 1st Holiday
SAN FRANCISCO, June 18, 2012 /CNW/ - Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the top 10 most popular Canada Day destinations, based on volume of hotel bookings. Domestic cities continue to dominate for the holiday and for the third year in a row, Toronto reigns as the top destination for travellers. Meanwhile, a new U.S. city – Boston – makes its debut onto the list.
"While some travellers are hopping over the border to visit big U.S. cities, the majority of them are taking advantage of low prices domestically to celebrate Canadian patriotism," said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, Vice President of the Hotwire Group. "Summer rates have been very good on discount sites like Hotwire, and with four out of the top five cities hosting local Canada Day festivities, visitors are sure to find a celebration at a price they'll love."
The top 10 most booked destinations for Canada Day and the average nightly hotel rates for each are as follows:

While there is only one new destination on this year's top-10 list, rankings have shifted slightly since 2012. Toronto remains the top destination for Canada's national day, offering visitors a full day of music and dance performances to celebrate Canada's 146th birthday at the Mel Lastman Square. Next is Vancouver, jumping from fifth place to second on the list. With prices still reasonable thanks to an abundance of new hotel rooms following the city's Olympic winter, visitors to Vancouver can affordably head to Canada Place to check out the city's elaborate Canada Day parade and waterfront party.
Coming in at third place this year is Ottawa. As Canada's capital city, Ottawa is a popular destination for travelers looking to celebrate their national pride. The city hosts concerts and festivities near Parliament Hill, and is home to one of the biggest fireworks shows in the country. Montreal comes in right after Ottawa, with its own festive fireworks display and public parade drawing enough visitors to earn the fourth place spot. Closing out the top five is New York City. The fact that this always-popular U.S. destination could only manage a fifth-place finish is a reflection of the overwhelming popularity of domestic travel for this holiday season.
*Average nightly rates are based on hotel bookings made on Hotwire.com between 4/14/13 and 6/14/13 for stays between 6/28/13 and 7/3/13.
