Hotwire Reveals Canadian Hotel Rate Report for January 2013
Growing Inventory and Temperate Weather Mean Big Savings for Winter Travellers
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23, 2013 /CNW/ - Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of its January 2013 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have decreased the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to destinations that can maximize their travel dollars so they can take more trips.
Whistler, BC tops the first rate report of 2013 with a drop of eight percent. Whistler rose two spots from the last Hotel Rate Report issued in 2012. Driven by growing inventory, hotels in the area have been able to offer travellers better rates through sites like Hotwire, making Whistler the top value destination this month. Whether it's skiing or snowboarding, Whistler has the right slope for every snow enthusiast; folks can visit a family friendly resort or get to untracked powder by way of helicopter to take on the variety of terrain sure to please visitors of all levels of expertise.
After a brief absence from the list, Victoria returns to the second spot with a seven percent price drop. This western city's mild climate leaves Victoria green and lush year-round, making this a particularly noteworthy winter destination. Hop over to the city by a quick ferry or seaplane ride from Vancouver, and all sorts of adventures await. Visit one of Victoria's coastal waterways, spectacular parks, or take a sailing lesson off the coast.
Ottawa, absent from the list for over a year, took the third spot this month with a six percent price drop. This year's atypical weather patterns have caused an early thaw, making for a warmer Winterlude festival than in previous years. Rising temperatures won't keep Ottawa from its annual winter celebrations this February, however. Competition to attract visitors to big the event, in combination with a rise in hotel inventory, have created more price drops in the region.
Winnipeg returns to the list for the first time since August 2012 at number four, and London, Ontario, which is back for the first time since January 2011, round out the top reductions with five and three percent drops, respectively. When visiting either city, be sure to catch a hockey game or take in some of the local culture by visiting one of their museums or theaters.
"We at Hotwire are working very hard to continue to provide travellers with big discounts in a variety of cities, and this month, we have several long-absent destinations returning to the list, including London and Ottawa," said Pierre-Etienne Chartier, vice president of the Hotwire Group. "It is our mission to help travelers take more trips this year and we plan on doing it by pointing folks to affordable and fun locales, whether they are well-known tourist destinations or up-and-coming hot spots yet to be explored."
When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for January 2013 include:

About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report
The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
