Hotwire Reveals Canadian Hotel Rate Report for January 2010
Calgary and Other Western Canadian Cities Top Report </pre> <p><location>SAN FRANCISCO</location>, <chron>Jan. 13</chron> /CNW/ -- Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the <chron>January 2010</chron> Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report. This monthly report features the top five cities in <location>Canada</location> where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that will maximize their travel dollars. This month, winter hotspot <location>Calgary</location> tops the list with a rate drop of nine percent. Also making the list are western Canadian cities <location>Edmonton</location> and Victoria, as well as tourist hubs <location>Montreal</location> and <location>Toronto</location> (percent drops of 8, 5, 5, and 4, respectively).</p> <p/> <p>Deals are still plentiful in <location>Calgary</location> and <location>Edmonton</location>, which both topped the list for a second consecutive month. Corporate business in both of these oil towns is still relatively weak, causing hotel prices to stay low. Ironically, with the Winter Olympics in <location>Vancouver</location> around the corner, nearby Victoria has dropped rates in reaction to a lull in tourism as travelers fear that hotel rates near <location>Vancouver</location> will already be high. Overall, this month's report shows that there are still deals in a wide array of cities, suiting the tastes of just about any tourist, from winter sports in <location>Calgary</location> to sightseeing in <location>Montreal</location>.</p> <p/> <p>Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory, which means that customers will find deals that they won't see anywhere else, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.</p> <p/> <p>When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for <chron>January 2010</chron> include:</p> <p/> <p> </p> <p> </p> <pre> Example of a Current Rank Hotel Market Price Drop Hotwire Deal CAD$/Night 1 Calgary, AL 9% 3.5-star $110 2 Edmonton, AL 8% 3-star $94 3 Victoria, BC 5% 4-star $92 4 Montreal, QB 5% 4-star $99 5 Toronto, ON 4% 4-star $90 </pre> <p>"With the Olympics coming up, Canadian cities not named <location>Vancouver</location> are making extra efforts to get travelers' attention," said Clem Bason, President of the Hotwire Group. "This means that consumers have an opportunity to save big in tourist destinations like <location>Montreal</location> and Victoria, which usually have higher hotel rates this time of year."</p> <pre> About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report </pre> <p>The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.</p> <pre> About Hotwire </pre> <p>Hotwire.com is a leading discount travel site with low rates on airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, cruises and vacation packages.
