Hotwire Reveals Canadian Hotel Rate Report for April 2012

Prices Dropping in Popular Cities with Rich Canadian Heritage and Stunning Landscape

SAN FRANCISCO, April 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of its April 2012 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire.com's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that can maximize their travel dollars so they can take more trips.

After a one month absence, the historically rich city of Kingston tops the list with a 10 percent price drop. Kingston returns this month to provide an idyllic backdrop for travelers looking to experience some of the best of old-world Canada. With 20 National Historic Sites, 700 historic properties and two World Heritage Site's (the Rideau Canal and the fortifications at Kingston), the city offers tourists plenty to see and experience.

For the third consecutive month, Victoria holds true as a value destination with a three percent price drop due to weaker than normal demand. As the capital city of British Columbia celebrates its 150th anniversary, Victoria is hosting a variety of anniversary activities, and with the long winter coming to an end, travellers can finally get outside to enjoy Victoria's beautiful scenery.

Banff, Edmonton and Winnipeg round out the top five this month, all with a two percent price drop. Banff, the gateway to one of the country's most wondrous parks, has remained on the list for several months in a row due to weaker demand, but we expect prices to increase next month. Edmonton has several hotels that are being quite competitive with price, which drives overall rates down. And Winnipeg, which came in third place last month, drops a couple slots to finish the list.

"Many Canadian cities begin to see a tourist traffic uptick this time of year, which tends to raise prices, but this spring several destinations are dealing with slightly weaker demand than normal," said Pierre-Etienne, vice president, operations of the Hotwire Group. "That makes this month a good time to take an affordable trip to some great cities before we go into later spring, warmer weather and higher prices."

Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory. This means customers can find incredibly low deals on Hotwire, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.

About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report

The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
